Monk

Acolyte's second job: spirit spheres, combo chains and Asura Strike.

Role

The Monk is the Acolyte's second job: a melee fighter who gathers spirit spheres and spends them on blows. Every sphere adds damage, and Throw Spirit Sphere hurls them at an enemy from afar. Raging Trifecta Blow sometimes turns a normal attack into a triple strike — right after it comes Raging Quadruple Blow, then Raging Thrust, and under Fury the chain ends with Asura Strike: a blow with all of the Monk's spirit that spends every SP. Occult Impaction hits harder the tougher the enemy's defense. Mental Strength makes the Monk nearly invulnerable, Root catches an enemy's blow, Snap moves to a cell in an instant. Acolyte skills stay.

Job change

  • Where: the St. Capitolina Abbey — the way in is from the Prontera fields. The guarding monk Tohobu stands at the gate.
  • Requirements: an Acolyte with Job Lv 40 or higher. All skill points must be spent on Acolyte skills: unspent points do not carry over to the second job, so the job cannot be changed while you have them.
  • Sensei Moohae in the abbey house asks for one of seven sets, chosen at random: for example, 5 Sticky Mucus, 10 Earthworm Peeling and 20 Green Herb, or 5 Solid Shell, 20 Shell and 5 Zargon.
  • Prayer: brother Touha recites one of three prayers — put its 10 lines in order without a mistake.
  • Brother Boohae asks how it went and lets you pick a trial: gather 30 mushrooms (Orange Net Mushroom or Orange Gooey Mushroom) in the mushroom field, or run 9 laps of the track without stepping into the traps.
  • Brother Tomoon leads to the trial hall: walk one of three undead corridors to its exit — you do not have to kill anything. Then he gives a Green Potion — drink it.
  • The oath with Sensei Moohae — and the reward: a Waghnak (Knuckle Dusters at Job Lv 50) and the Monk job.

The quest log guides you through every step and shows whom to visit.

Stats

Main Extra
STR, AGI DEX, VIT or INT

STR — damage, AGI — attack speed and a shorter pause between chain blows, DEX — hit and a faster Asura Strike, INT — more SP for Asura Strike.

Spirit spheres

  • Summon Spirit Sphere summons a sphere for 10 minutes; no more spheres than the skill level (up to 5). Each one adds 3 to the damage of normal attacks and skills.
  • Spheres are spent by Throw Spirit Sphere, Occult Impaction, Root, Raging Thrust, Snap (not under Fury), and five at once by Mental Strength, Fury and Asura Strike. Spheres vanish on death.
  • Absorb Spirit Sphere on yourself turns spheres into SP — 7 for each.

The chain

  • After Raging Trifecta Blow there is a split second to press Raging Quadruple Blow, after it — Raging Thrust, and under Fury with 4 spheres after that — Asura Strike without a cast. No need to pick a target: it hits whoever the Monk is fighting. While the window is open you cannot walk or make normal attacks.
  • The higher AGI and DEX, the shorter the pause between chain blows.

Asura Strike

  • Needs Fury and 5 spheres (4 in the chain). Spends every SP: the more SP you had, the bigger the damage. Ignores the target's defense and evasion.
  • For 5 minutes after the blow SP does not recover by itself — potions, Absorb Spirit Sphere and sitting with Spiritual Cadence still work. Under Fury SP does not recover by itself either.
  • Outside the chain it has a long cast that can be interrupted. After Snap, Asura Strike can be used only 2 seconds later.

Tips

  • Iron Fists works with knuckles or bare hands.
  • Under Mental Strength you cannot use skills, and walking and attacks are slower.
  • Root waits for a blow for a split second: when it catches one, the enemy and the Monk freeze; while caught you can use Throw Spirit Sphere, Occult Impaction, Raging Quadruple Blow and Asura Strike — depending on the Root level. It does not catch bosses.
  • The quest skills Ki Translation (a sphere for a party member) and Ki Explosion (a blow that scatters the enemies around) are taught by the abbey's monks.
